You laugh. Another day, another place you won't call home. You long for the moment you find what's been calling you - compelling you. You want to grasp the whispers in your mind that drag you from countryside to city to shore, like a vagamond with a purpose. There's nothing for you here, just bright lights and shady characters. You'll leave in the morning to seek out paradise once more.
"Hey!"
"Hey!" This time the exclamation's accompanied by a rough shake, waking the ragged stranger from his slumber.
"Whaddaya think you're doin' here, huh?" She grabs hold of his arm, trying to hoist him up.
"I apologise, I didn't realise I was in anyone's way." His head stays bowed as he stands on his own accord, and she releases him reluctantly.
"Yeah, well, you should've asked around," she says incertainly, unsettled by his manner. She speaks to his back - he has already turned away to go.
"Of course. Good evening." He is almost out of the dark alley and into the garish bright lights of the street before she moves herself to action, sprinting after him and grabbing his arm.
"Look, I'm sorry," she says, her face shying away from the inquisitive look he gives her. "I was rude - it was uncalled for. You're new here." It is a staement, not a question. She knows these streets, they've been her home since she can remember, and his face is a new one. "If you have no place to stay..." and it's a common courtesy to ask, because if he had any place else but the streets, he would not have been seeking solace in her alley. He gives her a deep nod, gesturing for her to lead, and again she is flustered by this stranger's politeness. She slowly walks back, conscious of his footsteps behind her, and adds, almost as an afterthought, "My name's Mary."
